Charles Horton Cooley: The Looking- Glass Self
Charles Cooley was born in 1864. He was an American Sociologist and studied at the University of Michigan. He later went on to teach at the University as an Economics and Sociology professor. One of his most famous ideas was, " The Looking- Glass Self". This stated that other people's views of you build and change your self image. What other people think of us is what we strive to become. This idea is widely accepted by sever psychologist and sociologists. An example that proves this theory is that a shy girl may not see herself as shy because she may talk a lot with her friends and family. Although when she is around the people who see her as shy she will be silent and act how a shy girl should act because that is what people make her out to be.
